Why buy a pre-owned road bike?
New road bikes have become significantly more expensive in recent years, mainly due to the rise of carbon frames and electronic shifting. A pre-owned road bike that is a few years old often offers the same riding experience for a fraction of the price — ideal if you are just starting out with cycling or want to experiment with a different frame type before investing in a new top-tier model.
What road bike frame size do you need?
The right frame size is just as important as it is with a new bike: you will notice the wrong size immediately in your back, shoulders, or knees. A common rule of thumb is that your saddle height is approximately 1.08 times your inseam. Road bikes are usually indicated in centimeters (e.g., 52, 54, 56 cm) — the length of the seat tube, measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the tube.
Unsure between two sizes? Choose the smaller frame: it is easier to adjust with a longer stem or a different seatpost than a frame that is just too big. Use our frame size guide to calculate your size, or take a test ride before making your final choice.
Material: aluminum, carbon, or steel?
- Aluminum is lighter than steel, stiff, and usually the most affordable second-hand — a great choice for most recreational riders.
- Carbon is the lightest and most aerodynamically formable, but is more sensitive to hairline cracks after a fall. If in doubt, always have a pre-owned carbon frame thoroughly inspected.
- Steel is durable and comfortable but heavier — popular for retro and touring models.
Rim brakes or disc brakes?
You will encounter both systems on (pre-owned) road bikes. Rim brakes are lighter and easier to adjust yourself. Disc brakes — especially hydraulic ones — provide more powerful braking and perform better in wet conditions, but they weigh slightly more and are more technically demanding to maintain. Both are a great choice; just make sure to check that the brakes engage smoothly and evenly before you buy.
Groupset and gears: what to look for
The groupset (shifters, derailleurs, crankset, cassette, and brakes) largely determines how the bike feels. Well-known Shimano levels include Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace — the higher the level, the lighter and more precise the shifting, but also the more expensive the replacement parts are. For most pre-owned buyers, a 105 or Tiagra groupset is more than sufficient. Check that shifting is smooth in all positions, both front and back, and that the chain is not stretched.
How to check if a pre-owned road bike has been stolen
Before buying a pre-owned road bike — especially from a private seller — it is wise to check the frame number. You can usually find this number on the underside of the frame near the bottom bracket, on the seat tube, or on the head tube. You can use the official channels of the Dutch police to check for free if a bike is registered as stolen:
- Stop Heling — the official database of the Ministry of Justice and Security
- RDW Bicycle Theft Register — the bicycle theft register of the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (reports from 2008 onwards)
You can find more information about this on the police website. When purchasing from 2dehandsfietsenwinkel, you do not need to do this yourself — we already check it for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pre-owned road bike just as fast as a new one?
The speed of a road bike depends primarily on weight and aerodynamics, not age. A well-maintained pre-owned road bike performs just as well as a comparable new model.
What road bike frame size do I need?
A rule of thumb is 1.08 times your inseam for the saddle height. Use our frame size guide for an accurate calculation, or contact us for personal advice.
How do I check if a pre-owned road bike has been stolen?
Check the frame number via Stop Heling or the RDW Bicycle Theft Register. With us, this has already been checked for you.
Rim brakes or disc brakes: which is better?
